Learn how to set up your Super Everdrive X5 for N64 in minutes. Step-by-step instructions for firmware, ROMs, and troubleshooting common issues.
Quick Answer
To set up your Super Everdrive X5, format a microSD card (FAT32), copy the latest firmware and your ROMs, then insert the cart into your N64 and power on.
What You Need Before Starting
You'll need a Super Everdrive X5 cartridge, a microSD card (up to 128GB), a computer with a card reader, and an N64 console. The cart works with any region N64 thanks to the built-in SuperKey region bypass, so you don't need a separate adapter.
Firmware vs. ROMs – What Goes Where
The Everdrive runs on two types of files: the firmware (the operating system that controls the cart) and ROMs (the game files). The firmware goes in the root of the SD card; ROMs can go in any folder. Mixing them up is the most common mistake – if you put ROMs in the root, the cart may not boot.
Step-by-Step Setup Guide
- 1. Format Your microSD Card: Insert the microSD card into your computer. Format it as FAT32 with a default cluster size (32KB or 64KB). If your card is larger than 32GB, use a third-party tool like GUIFormat or Rufus – Windows built-in formatter won't offer FAT32 for large cards. Using exFAT or NTFS will prevent the Everdrive from reading the card.
- 2. Download and Install Firmware: Go to the official Everdrive website (krikzz.com) and download the latest Super Everdrive X5 firmware (the .bin file). Copy the firmware file to the root of your microSD card. Do not rename the file – the cart looks for the exact filename. If you skip this step, the cart will show a blank screen or an error.
- 3. Add Your ROMs: Create a folder on the SD card called 'roms' (or any name you prefer). Copy your legally obtained N64 ROM files (.z64 or .n64 format) into that folder. The cart supports up to 7.5MB ROMs, which covers the vast majority of N64 games. ROMs must be unzipped. Leave them as .z64 files for best compatibility.
- 4. Insert and Boot: Eject the SD card from your computer and insert it into the Super Everdrive X5 cartridge. Insert the cartridge into your N64 and power on the console. You should see the Everdrive menu. If you see a region lock screen, the SuperKey is working – press Start to bypass it. If the screen stays black, re-seat the cartridge and check that the SD card is fully inserted.
- 5. Load a Game and Save: Use the D-pad to navigate to your ROM folder, select a game, and press A. The game will load in a few seconds. To save, use the game's built-in save function – the Everdrive writes save data to the SD card automatically. The cart supports save RAM up to 128KB. Never remove the SD card while the console is on – you may corrupt save files.
Product Facts
- Super Everdrive X5: Supports microSD cards up to 128GB and up to 1000 files per folder in the OS. You can store a large N64 library without needing to organize into many subfolders, but keep each folder under 1000 files to avoid menu slowdown.
